The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
