Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which works to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his new release the album was named the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots played in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the shows I did around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

The money helped spaces that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The notion that funds from performances in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his award winnings to charitable organizations.

In the band earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their album their work, lead singer the singer announced that the act would donate their cash to the organization the charity.

That year, musician Ms Dynamite divided her prize across several organizations, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to outlets.

Previously, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that supported their group, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," said artist Heather Small. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory touched the lives of others."

Last week, the trust shared it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in the city and the other in the city were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
