Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
